WHAT is Partial vocabulary?
Partial Vocabulary is Using one or more aspects of a six-step process to teach vocabulary.
The six-step process is:

  • teacher explanation

  • student explanation

  • student graphic or pictographs representation

  • review using comparison activities

  • student discussion of vocabulary terms

  • use of games.

A teacher explanation can be a verbal discussion, speech or lecture. A teacher explanation is useful in the classroom for many reasons. One reason is because some children are audio learners. Audio learners learn best by hearing. For example, a verbal lesson. A verbal explanation would apply in vocabulary because students would retain the definitions. You probably don't realize that this method is used daily. This method is not only used in the classroom but also in everyday life.

Student Explanation is also a beneficial method. It can often be difficult for teachers to explain criteria to children when there's a big age gap. That's when student explanation comes in handy. Children can connect with each other in a way that teacher's can't. They can relate ideas easier than teachers can sometimes. Also, in vocabulary a dictionary definition can sound like another language sometimes. Even an adults definition can. When students help one another, it not only builds character but also confidence and presents leadership opportunities.

As seen in this video, student teaching can be fun for the kids. In this video, the boy led the group chant. It shows the interaction between the students made him joyful and confident. The class learns as a group what the letters in the alphabet sound like while putting hand motions towards them. This teaching tactic helps audio learners and kinesthetic learners.

Vocabulary Worksheets
Vocabulary worksheets are beneficial mostly in lower grade classrooms. For students with the visual learning style, the worksheets are perfect. Worksheets are an effective tool in ongoing efforts to encourage students to engage their brains during class. Thus are often colorful. A benefit of using worksheets in class, is it can also help direct students' learning out-of-class. The worksheets are commonly themed as seasons, people and holidays. They allows the students to match the word to a picture and provides real life information. This helps students make the connection between the two.
